Solar Eclipse Photographs – May 20, 2012

May 21st, 2012 No comments

I shot the solar eclipse from the south part of Las Vegas, NV.  I set up my old Celestron 80ED refractor (600mm f/7.5) on my CGEM mount.  I shot through that telescope with my Canon 5D Mark II and a Thousand Oaks Optics solar filter.  Most of the shots were taken at 1/125 second and ISO 100.  A few were taken at slightly longer exposures once the sun started getting very low in the sky.  All of the shots were resized to be more web friendly.

Here’s the setup…

Here’s a sequence of shots I put together in one image. The shots were taken 10 minutes apart.  They were combined in Photoshop and the black background was increased to make the square image.

Here are the individual shots from that sequence.  The specs on the sun are sunspots…

This is a shot taken as the sun was setting behind the mountains to the west of Las Vegas…

The rest of the shots were taken with a Canon Rebel XT and a Canon 70-200 F/4L…
